Our Founder

Detroit-native, Monique Jackson knew at an early age she wanted to beautify others. At about seven years of age she received a doll for Christmas named Kenya. Her Kenya doll had long kinky curly hair which she maintained daily with braids and ponytails. She ensured Kenya's outfits matched her hair barrettes and beads for the day although the doll rarely made it past her bedroom.

At 13, Monique began working as a seasonal shampoo assistant at Laverne's Hair Connection of Highland Park, MI. The salon's location on the infamous Woodward Avenue made it a high pace hair haven of walk-in clients. She learned rather quickly, the trending basics of the hair industry from pressing hair with Marcel irons to styling ponytails with flat twists and hair extensions.

Throughout Monique's high-school years she worked part-time at an upscale mall salon, Heidei's of Dearborn, MI. Heidei's is where she learned chemical services and salon etiquette. She was determined to follow high-school graduation with a pursuit to Cosmetology school but took a temporary detour to Wilberforce University of Ohio, where she earned a Bachelor's of Arts in Political Science.

After successful completion of her baccalaureate program, her desire was to find a way to fit Cosmetology school in with her newly-offered government position. For over two years she worked for ten hours a day with the Utah Occupational Safety and Health Administration followed by a one-hour drive to Fran Brown/Marinello College of Beauty. She attended Cosmetology school for five hours every evening where she learned intensely of hair, esthetics and barbering;theory, practical, clinical, contamination control and other beauty fundamentals.

At completion of Cosmetology school, Monique continued working for the government along with evening appointments at Hair Enhancements Salon of Roy, MI and Covet Hair Studio of Syracuse, UT. She fell in love with her passion for hair and desired a successful business within the beauty industry.

In 2011, she returned to Michigan to pursue her Master's of Business Administration. She attended graduate school and worked full-time at Salon DNA of Detroit, MI where she mastered skills in precision cuts, hair extensions and embraced the endeared name Monique The Stylist. She underwent continuing education and salon management training to prepare for her next venture. Most notable was her salon entrepreneurial workshop experience with Tawny Thieu-Walker, Owner of Liquid Salon in Bloomfield Hills, MI. She received a shift in mindset and knew she had take advantage of her full potential.

At the completion of graduate school she acquired One Small Room Salon in Detroit, MI. The quaint loft-like space provided her with the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the beauty salon business. She derived much of her savvy business support from her mentors Cassandra Ward, renowned make-up artist and owner of Pink and White Salon and Ebony Swank, serial entrepreneur of Swank-a-Posh Boutiques.

At this time, Monique loves nothing more than standing behind the chair providing quality hair care services to her clients. She services personal image clients throughout the Metro Detroit area and accepts travel requests worldwide. She also consults fellow stylists, barbers, make-up artists and event coordinators looking to build concierge or beauty-related businesses.

Monique The Stylist is a Salon Proprietor, Master Stylist and Professional Development Educator. She empowers female businesswomen to gain respect within the business world so that they can elevate their career pursuits with a competitive edge.
